Silchar: Serious concerns have been raised over the alleged lack of emergency services during night hours at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), the premier government healthcare institution in Barak Valley.

Former Meherpur Gaon Panchayat president Debashish Roy has alleged that patients arriving from across the region and neighbouring states are frequently deprived of essential diagnostic services like X-rays and blood tests at night. In many cases, attendants are reportedly told that machines are non-functional—only to find them working again the following morning.

“If the hospital claims to offer 24×7 services, why are patients denied critical diagnostics at night?” Roy questioned, calling it a gross inconvenience and harassment for families seeking urgent care.

Additionally, Roy pointed out the alarming absence of security on campus. Incidents of mobile phone and wallet thefts have reportedly become commonplace within the hospital premises, further distressing patients and their attendants.

Roy has raised the matter with several key leaders, including Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya, Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha, Minister Kaushik Rai, MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, and SMCH Principal Dr. Bhaskar Gupta. Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha has assured that he will take up the issue with hospital authorities for immediate redressal.
