Guwahati: Assam’s healthcare sector is poised for a major leap forward with the state cabinet approving a comprehensive upgrade of government medical institutions under the ASTHA (Assam State Tertiary Healthcare Advancement) Plan, involving an investment of Rs.4,287 crore.
The initiative aims to modernize tertiary healthcare across the state, enhancing infrastructure, technology, and medical education. Under the plan, the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Assam’s premier medical institution will undergo a complete rebuild equipped with world-class facilities.
Alongside, Silchar Medical College and Hospital and Dibrugarh Medical College and Hospital will see the introduction of Smart Classrooms and Modern Laboratories, designed to elevate learning standards and research capacity for future medical professionals.
Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has received widespread appreciation for what many have termed a visionary and forward-looking decision to strengthen the healthcare backbone of the state. The project is expected to not only expand clinical capacity but also boost medical research, diagnostics, and training, ushering in a new era of healthcare excellence in Assam.
