Silchar: The Assam Cabinet has approved the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, describing it as a key step in safeguarding women’s rights and strengthening legal protections for those trapped in illegal or unrecognized marriages. The Bill will now be placed before the Legislative Assembly.
Officials said the proposed law seeks to impose a statewide ban on polygamy, with the exception of areas under the Sixth Schedule. The government argues that the measure will reinforce dignity and legal security for women, a priority it says has driven recent policy decisions.
The Bill outlines several penalties. Concealing a previous marriage could draw up to ten years in prison, while entering into an unlawful polygamous marriage may lead to imprisonment of up to seven years. Those who facilitate such marriages, including priests or guardians, may face up to two years in jail. Repeat offenders will face stricter punishment.
The state government has also proposed compensation and legal safeguards for women affected by illegal marriages, calling this an essential part of the framework.
With Cabinet approval secured, the government is preparing to introduce the Bill in the Assembly, framing it as another step in its wider push for social reform and women’s empowerment.
