Guwahati: A doctor from Assam has triggered a widescale online debate after alleging that some Ayurvedic practitioners were routinely prescribing only allopathic medicines, including powerful antibiotics.

Dr Priyam Bordoloi shared a prescription on social media and questioned why every drug listed was allopathic. He pointed out instances where practitioners of traditional medicine had reportedly prescribed high-end antibiotics such as Meropenem for minor ailments. His post quickly gained traction and opened a larger conversation about prescription practices across different medical systems in India.

The visibility came with backlash. Dr Bordoloi said he received a series of threatening direct messages urging him to delete the post. According to him, the accounts were anonymous and not linked to any senior doctors, influencers or official organisations. The messages ranged from “delete this” to accusations that he was “ruining” the reputation of Ayurveda.

He refused to take down the post and questioned why a single screenshot could provoke such a reaction. In his words, if a system feels threatened by one tweet, the issue lies deeper than the criticism.

The controversy has since prompted a wider discussion on malpractice in alternative medical systems and the need for greater accountability. Dr Bordoloi maintains that patients have a right to clarity and safe treatment, regardless of the medical stream they choose.
