Guwahati : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that the state government will introduce several “important and historic” bills in the next session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, including legislation aimed at curbing ‘love jihad’ and banning polygamy.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said that the drafts of these proposed bills are currently under cabinet review. Once cleared, they will be tabled for discussion and passage during the upcoming session.

“The government is preparing to bring forward a set of important bills that will have long-term social and cultural impact. These include laws against love jihad and polygamy,” Sarma said.

In addition to these, the Chief Minister mentioned that other legislative proposals are being formulated to protect and preserve Assam’s Satras—the Vaishnavite monasteries that hold deep cultural and spiritual significance in the state—and to grant land rights to members of the tea tribe communities.

Sarma described these upcoming bills as part of the government’s broader effort to promote social harmony, safeguard cultural heritage, and address long-standing community concerns.

The exact date of the Assembly session and details of the proposed laws are expected to be finalized after cabinet approval.
