Guwahati: Assam Police on Thursday warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found spreading rumours about shortages of LPG, POL and other petroleum products in the state.
In a statement, the police said some misleading claims are being circulated which could create unnecessary panic among the public. Authorities cautioned that individuals or groups attempting to spread such misinformation will face legal consequences.
The police urged citizens not to believe or forward any unverified messages related to fuel shortages. It also advised people to rely only on official information and verified sources.
According to the advisory, such rumours may be spread by inimical elements with the intention of creating confusion and disturbing public order.
Assam Police appealed to the public to remain calm and responsible while using social media, and to immediately report any suspicious or misleading messages to the authorities.
