Silchar: The Government of Assam will launch a grand, year-long celebration to mark the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, beginning September 8, with a historic inaugural ceremony in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the event, giving the tribute a national stature befitting one of India’s most revered cultural icons.
In a distinctive move, the state government has asked each district to nominate people who have personally interacted with Dr. Hazarika or have cherished memories of him. From Cachar, 50 such eminent personalities will be invited to the inaugural in Guwahati — a gesture honouring both their personal connection with the bard and their role in keeping his legacy alive.
The Cachar District Administration has emphasised that their presence will add a deeply emotional and historic dimension to the occasion, serving as a living link to Dr. Hazarika’s enduring influence on Assam’s cultural landscape.
To finalise preparations, a planning meeting will be held on August 11, at 3 p.m. in the new Conference Hall of the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar. Leading citizens, cultural stalwarts, and anyone in the district who has shared memorable moments with Dr. Hazarika are invited to attend. The meeting will discuss Cachar’s participation in the Guwahati inaugural and outline local programmes for the centenary year.
The administration has urged residents to treat this milestone as a collective moment of pride — celebrating Dr. Bhupen Hazarika not only as a legendary singer, composer, and poet, but also as a cultural ambassador whose message of unity, humanity, and brotherhood continues to inspire generations.
