Assam University holds two-day programme on data skills and fieldwork in social work

Silchar: The Department of Social Work at Assam University, Silchar, wrapped up a two-day capacity-building programme on field-based learning and data skills on 28 and 29 November at the Bipin Chandra Paul Seminar Hall.

The event, titled Field-Based Learning in Social Work and the Art of Converting Data into Knowledge, was convened by Prof. Subhabrata Dutta and coordinated by Dr. Joyashri Dey.

The opening day centred on building essential fieldwork competencies. Manoj Kumar Sircar guided participants through methods for assessing community vulnerability, using tools such as GIS mapping and hazard maps.

He also introduced Social Resource Mapping to help learners identify local assets and understand community structures. Sessions on documentation rounded out the day, reinforcing its importance as a professional practice.

The second day shifted the spotlight to data analysis and emerging technology. Prof. Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee offered a practical introduction to SPSS, walking students through data handling and basic analytical techniques.

Amlan Nag followed with a session on the use of Artificial Intelligence in professional work, demonstrating how AI can support research and presentation tasks while underlining the need for careful evaluation and fact-checking.

By the end of the programme, participants had gained a grounded mix of field techniques and analytical tools, preparing them to turn raw information into insight for effective social work practice.
