Silchar: Assam University observed Lachit Diwas on Monday, bringing the campus together to honour Bir Lachit Barphukan on his 403rd birth anniversary. The day carries deep significance in Assam, marking the legacy of the seventeenth century Ahom general whose leadership at the Battle of Saraighat shaped the region’s history.
Vice Chancellor Rajive Mohan Pant led the university community in offering floral tributes to a portrait of the revered commander. Faculty members, students, and staff attended the ceremony, reflecting the university’s collective respect for Barphukan’s enduring influence.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Pant highlighted the relevance of Barphukan’s life in the present moment. He said the general’s courage, strategic mind, and sense of duty continue to inspire. He added that Barphukan’s example reminds people of the strength required to defend one’s land and culture.
Lachit Diwas is observed across Assam in memory of Barphukan’s decisive role in repelling a major Mughal offensive at Saraighat in 1671. His willingness to place duty above personal ties remains one of the most cited stories of integrity in Assamese history.
With the tribute, Assam University joined institutions across the state in celebrating a figure whose legacy still shapes Assam’s identity and collective memory.
