Silchar: Assam University’s Department of Sanskrit celebrated Gita Jayanti on Monday, observing the occasion with traditional rituals and discussions on the enduring relevance of the Bhagavad Gita.
Faculty members, including Head of Department Shanti Pokhrel, Professor Govinda Sharma, and guest faculty Dr Kallol Roy and Dr Biswajit Rudra Pal, joined postgraduate students and research scholars for the programme.
The event opened with the lighting of the lamp, followed by a recitation of Gita verses by research scholar Tania Pain. Dr Kallol Roy explained the purpose of the observance, while researcher Vijaya Lakshmi Sharma spoke at length on the Gita’s core ideas of karma, jnana and bhakti. Dr Biswajit Rudra Pal highlighted teachings from the text that still carry practical value.
Postgraduate student Saurabh Nath and research scholar Anima Roy Biswas reflected on the need for regular study of the Gita and its relevance to contemporary life. In her address, Shanti Pokhrel stressed the importance of karma yoga and encouraged students to adopt daily Gita reading.
Professor Govinda Sharma also drew from Gita verses to underline the value of action-oriented practice. The programme concluded with a collective recitation of the second chapter, Sankhya Yoga, followed by a vote of thanks and the chanting of the Shanti Mantra.
