Villagers Demand Swift Action

Silchar: A disturbing incident of domestic violence has come to light from the Aulia Forest Gate area along Sonai Road, where a woman was reportedly assaulted in broad daylight by her estranged, alcoholic husband and his accomplices. The victim, Anjana Begum Laskar, has filed a formal complaint at Rangirkhari Police Station, even as villagers express frustration over the police’s inaction.
According to reports, the incident took place last Saturday afternoon at the tea and rice stall Anjana runs near her mother’s house. Allegedly, her former husband, Sajan Hussain Laskar of Bagpur, arrived at the shop in an inebriated state, accompanied by two others. The three forcibly restrained her, following which Sajan allegedly punched and hit her repeatedly. In a shocking act of aggression, he also tore her clothes and attempted to strangle her.
Alarmed by her cries for help, nearby locals rushed to the spot, prompting the assailants to flee. Anjana later lodged an FIR at Rangirkhari Police Station. However, even several days after the incident, police have reportedly not taken any action to apprehend the accused.
Anjana shared that she was married to Sajan 15 years ago. Within five years, she began facing repeated physical and mental abuse. Despite several interventions by village elders and attempts at rehabilitation for Sajan’s substance abuse, the violence continued. Eventually, she left her marital home, sought divorce, and moved in with her mother along with her two children.
To support her family, Anjana took up domestic work and recently started a modest food stall. However, she claims Sajan continued to harass her, visiting the shop often to assault her and snatch money. During Saturday’s attack, she alleged that ₹2,000 in cash was looted from her stall.
The incident has sparked widespread anger among the local community. On Tuesday, residents, including Sabool Hussain Laskar and Khairul Hussain Laskar, issued a public appeal through the media, urging the district police to immediately arrest Sajan Hussain Laskar and his brother Salman Hussain Laskar, who is also accused of aiding the assault.
The villagers have demanded swift legal action to ensure justice for Anjana and prevent further attacks on vulnerable women.
