Silchar: Tension gripped Silchar Radhamadhab College around noon when a youth allegedly attempted to attack a female student with acid inside the campus. The accused, identified as Shubham Das of Saratpally, Silchar, was reportedly thwarted by the timely intervention of other students.

According to sources, Das had been pursuing the student with repeated romantic proposals for a considerable period. After she consistently rejected his advances, he allegedly tried to assault her with acid. Alert students overpowered him, leading to chaos in the college premises.

Police from Rangirkhari Police Station rushed to the spot, brought the situation under control, and took the accused into custody. Witnesses also alleged that some women accompanying Das attempted to assault the students who intervened.

A case has been registered at Rangirkhari Police Station, and an investigation is underway.
