Shillong: Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira has said that expanding Baljek Airport to accommodate large Airbus aircraft is not likely due to land limitations.
He said the state is instead working to upgrade the airport so that it can handle smaller 60 to 70 seater flights. The move is aimed at improving air connectivity in the region in a practical way.
The minister also pointed out that land compensation issues linked to expansion are still pending.
He informed that the Centre has assured Rs 50 crore for the expansion of Shillong Airport.
Clarifying reports, Shira said there is no plan to build a new airport in Tura. The government is looking at other options to boost connectivity.
As part of this plan, helipads will be developed at every district headquarters across the state. This is expected to improve access to remote areas.
