Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has almost finalised its candidate panels for around 90 Assembly constituencies ahead of the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly election, 2026.
Speaking to reporters after a late-night meeting at the party’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, the Chief Minister said internal discussions on most seats have been completed.
He indicated that the BJP is likely to release its first list of candidates between March 10 and March 12.
Sarma also said discussions with alliance partners will be held soon to finalise seat-sharing arrangements for the remaining constituencies. According to him, the BJP will hold talks with the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front to settle the distribution of seats.
The meeting at the party headquarters reportedly reviewed the political situation across constituencies and assessed potential candidates. With the election process drawing closer, the BJP has stepped up organisational preparations and coordination with its allies to frame a consolidated strategy for the polls.
During the interaction with the media, Sarma also launched a sharp attack on Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi. He said there was little value in reacting to Gogoi’s statements, alleging that the opposition leader frequently changes his stand on key political issues.
The Chief Minister claimed that Gogoi would continue altering his narrative until the final day of nomination filing, referring to the shifting political alignments ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, Gogoi announced that individuals interested in contesting the upcoming election from the Raijor Dal may meet him between 11 AM and 3 PM at the Kaziranga Orchid Park on March 5 as part of the party’s candidate outreach efforts.
With nomination deadlines approaching and alliances still being negotiated, the exchange reflects the growing political intensity ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
