Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha expressed deep grief at the loss

Silchar: Sushil Chakraborty, veteran BJP leader and one of the prominent faces of the party in Silchar during the 1990s, passed away on Thursday morning around 8.45 am. He was 80. Chakraborty is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
A respected figure in public life, Chakraborty had briefly moved to Meghalaya in the 1980s for health reasons before returning to Silchar. He worked as a teacher and later ran a successful medicines business, all the while staying active in social and cultural organisations.
During the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, he played a pivotal role as vice-president of the Cachar district Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), giving the movement significant momentum in the region. He later joined the BJP and served the party with distinction. Over the years, he was also associated with the Asom Sahitya Sabha, Hindu Milan Parishad, and the Cachar District Drug Dealers Owners Association.
His demise has drawn widespread condolences. Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty and Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha expressed deep grief at the loss.
Chakraborty’s funeral was held at Silchar Smashan Ghat and attended by a host of dignitaries including Lipika Roy, vice-president of Silchar BJP Morcha, Kajal Roy, vice-president of Silchar BJP Mandal, Santosh Rai of RSS South Assam, former municipal commissioner Sajal Banik, and Atanu Bhattacharjee, general secretary of Silchar DSA, among others.
