Silchar: A notable contribution to the history of local governance in Northeast India was unveiled today with the release of “Panchayat Leadership in Cachar during British India”, authored by noted scholar Abid Raja Mazumder. The launch ceremony was held at Banga Bhawan, Arun Chanda Road, Sadarghat, Silchar, at 11 a.m.
The event was presided over by eminent academician and former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Prof. Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee. Among those present were writer and researcher Sanjib Deblaskar, the author himself, former MCD College Principal Sabbir Ahmed Choudhury, former BDO Sihab Uddin Ahmed, and editor-proprietor of Dainik Samayik Prasanga, Taimur Raja Chowdhury.
Author Abid Raja Mazumder, who has previously penned 13 books, offered a brief overview of his latest work and reflected on the historical context of the Panchayat system and the role of Sarpanchs in British-era Cachar. He expressed his gratitude to all who supported his research and writing process.
Speaking on the occasion, Taimur Raja Chowdhury hailed the book as a vital scholarly work, urging everyone to read it. He lauded the author’s research-oriented approach and also fondly recalled the late Imad Uddin Bulbul.
Sanjib Deblaskar provided an in-depth discussion of the book and praised Mazumder’s dedication to historical inquiry. Sabbir Ahmed Choudhury and Sihab Uddin Ahmed also shared their thoughts, with the latter elaborating on the Panchayat structure and the socio-political landscape of the time, while offering insights into the life and contributions of the author.
In his address, Prof. Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee commended Abid Raja Mazumder for his enlightening work, remarking that the author deserves special recognition for his efforts in documenting this important yet often overlooked chapter of regional history. He also encouraged the audience to embrace reading and writing as part of a lifelong intellectual journey.
Published by Natun Diganta Prakashani, Silchar, the book is poised to become a valuable resource for researchers, historians, and students of political history, especially those focusing on the Northeast. The ceremony was anchored by publisher Mita Das Purkayastha, and the cultural mood of the event was enhanced by a song rendered by Shrabani Sarkar.
