Minister Rai expressed his pride in inaugurating the first building constructed since the institution’s upgrade to university status

Silchar: Gurucharan University on Thursday marked a significant milestone with the inauguration of the Bishnu Charan Dey Purkayastha Memorial Building, developed under the RUSA 2.0 project. Assam’s Minister for Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Kaushik Rai, an alumnus of the institution, unveiled the name plaque and cut the ceremonial ribbon to formally open the facility.
The event was attended by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niranjan Roy, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Registrar Dr. Bidyut Kanti Paul, Academic Registrar Dr. Abhijit Nath, Cachar College Principal Dr. Apurba Nag, faculty members, and students.
Proceedings began with Saraswati Vandana by student Swarnali Purkayastha, followed by a welcome song by Anisha Dutta. In his welcome address, Registrar Dr. Paul underlined the project’s importance, while former RUSA Project Coordinator Chandan Pal Choudhury outlined the planning and construction journey.
Extending Independence Day greetings, MLA Chakraborty praised the university’s contribution to community development and announced a grant of Rs 10 lakh for installing an air-conditioning system in the auditorium.

Minister Rai expressed his pride in inaugurating the first building constructed since the institution’s upgrade to university status. He confirmed that the sanctioned Rs 10 crore for Gurucharan University would be released by September 15 and assured efforts to identify land for a new campus. He also personally contributed Rs 10 lakh for auditorium upgrades.
A voice message from Bishnu Charan Dey Purkayastha’s granddaughter, Manjushree Dey, conveyed the family’s appreciation. Dr. Nag highlighted the life and legacy of Bishnu Charan Dey Purkayastha and the significance of dedicating the building in his honour.
Prof. Roy thanked the Assam government for its support under RUSA, while Dr. Nath delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was anchored by Prof. Shrestha Kar.
