Silchar: The Cachar district administration has launched an intensified drive against the illegal liquor trade and misuse of subsidized domestic LPG cylinders, sending a strong signal that violations endangering public safety or depriving citizens of entitlements will not be tolerated.

Acting on the directions of District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, IAS, enforcement teams carried out a series of raids across Silchar this week. The operations, officials said, are part of a wider push to curb black marketing and uphold the rule of law.

On Friday, a joint team led by Assistant Commissioner Unhale Ashish Vidyadhar, IAS, and the Superintendent of Excise raided Malugram, Itkhola, Circuit House Road, National Highway Point, Ramnagar Bypass, and adjoining areas.

Ten cases were registered, eight people arrested, and liquor including 5.7 litres of IMFL, 7.8 litres of beer, and 3 litres of country spirit seized. Fines totaling Rs 20,000 were imposed. Authorities underlined that the aim was to break the networks behind the illegal trade, long a source of public grievance.

Earlier in the week, the administration in coordination with Silchar Municipal Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, and local LPG distributors targeted hotels and restaurants illegally using domestic cylinders.

Raids on Circuit House Road, Club Road, and Ramnagar ISBT led to the seizure of eleven 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders, which were placed in custody with M/s Prafulla Indane Agency, Rangirkhari.

Establishments named for violations included Hotel Shreea (2 cylinders), Hotel Dreamland (1), Hotel Kalpataru/Restaurant Diya (1), New Hilara Marwari Tandoori Dhaba (4), and Randhan Family Dhaba, Tarapur (3). Officials warned that penalties and even cancellation of trade licenses could follow.

DC Yadav reiterated the district’s zero-tolerance stance, stressing that both illegal liquor and misuse of subsidized LPG were serious offences that threatened safety and deprived households of their due share. He said the drives would continue and intensify in the coming weeks as part of a sustained campaign.

The crackdown has been welcomed by residents, who praised the administration’s proactive steps. By targeting liquor rackets and LPG misuse together, officials believe they have addressed key public concerns while reinforcing trust in the administration’s commitment to fairness, safety, and accountability.
