Silchar: The Cachar district administration has made it mandatory for all hotels, restaurants, and similar establishments to conduct monthly water quality tests to safeguard public health and guarantee safe drinking water. The directive, issued by Additional District Commissioner Antara Sen, took effect on Wednesday.
Under the order, every establishment serving drinking water to guests or the public must test samples for physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters as per Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms. Tests are to be carried out through the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) or other PHED-recognized laboratories. Reports must be submitted to the District Health Officer, Silchar Municipal Corporation, or the relevant licensing authority by the 10th of each month.
The PHED has been assigned to facilitate testing services and maintain a centralized database of reports. Officials noted that the initiative will help identify contaminants early and create a transparent compliance record for commercial establishments.
The administration has also issued a strict warning: non-compliance will invite legal action under the Public Health Act, the Food Safety and Standards Act, and other applicable laws.
Citizens have welcomed the move, calling it a timely step to prevent water-borne diseases and improve accountability. By enforcing monthly testing, the Cachar administration aims to build responsibility among hoteliers and restaurateurs while strengthening its broader public health framework.
