Silchar: In a major move to bring transparency and efficiency to the fertilizer distribution system in Cachar, the District Administration, in collaboration with Brahmaputra Valley Fertilizer Corporation Limited (BVFCL), conducted a special distribution programme on Tuesday, handing over Point-of-Sale (POS) machines to fertilizer vendors across the district.

Held in Silchar, the event was led by Roktim Baruah, Additional District Commissioner (Agriculture), who presided over the distribution ceremony and addressed a gathering of officials, retailers, and BVFCL representatives. In his keynote address, Roktim Baruah highlighted the importance of integrating technology into the fertilizer supply chain to eliminate loopholes and ensure real-time monitoring.

“The distribution of POS machines is a transformative step aimed at fostering accountability, transparency, and efficiency. This system will benefit both retailers and farmers while aligning with the government’s digital governance vision,” he said.

He further reiterated the administration’s resolve to uphold a fair and hassle-free trade environment.
“We are aware of the challenges faced by vendors and are here to address them. However, any violation of government norms in the transportation or sale of fertilizers will be dealt with firmly,” Baruah cautioned.

District Agriculture Officer Dr. A. R. Ahamed elaborated on the policy objectives behind the POS initiative, terming it a crucial intervention to ensure that subsidies and government support reach the right beneficiaries without distortion.

“This is more than just a technological upgrade. It’s a step to strengthen trust and compliance across the fertilizer distribution network. Vendors are key stakeholders, and their cooperation is essential,” he noted.

The programme also saw the participation of Dr. R. Chakraborty, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer; Mrinmoy Nath, Nodal Officer (Fertilizer); and senior officials from BVFCL. Vendors were briefed on updated government policies, logistical protocols, and the ethical expectations tied to fertilizer sales.

An open forum was held during the event, where vendors shared their suggestions and concerns. Officials responded with reassurances and emphasized that the administration remains committed to resolving operational hurdles while maintaining strict vigilance against malpractices.

This initiative marks a proactive step by the district administration to bridge gaps between policy and grassroots implementation, reinforcing a transparent, efficient, and equitable fertilizer distribution system in Cachar.
