Silchar: In light of continuous heavy rainfall across Silchar and various parts of Cachar district over the past 24 hours, the District Administration has announced the temporary closure of all educational institutions on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. The decision has been taken as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and the general public amidst worsening weather conditions and rising water levels.

The order, issued under Section 34(M) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, covers all Government and Private institutions, including schools, colleges, universities, ITIs, training centres, and Anganwadi centres across the district. However, the administration clarified that all pre-scheduled examinations will be held as per their existing timetable without any change.

Several parts of the district are already reeling under waterlogging, with reports of road blockages posing serious challenges to daily movement, particularly for schoolchildren. The administration has urged heads of institutions to ensure strict compliance with the closure directive.

Simultaneously, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Cachar, has issued a public advisory urging residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions. With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting more rainfall and the Barak River witnessing a gradual rise in water levels, the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying and vulnerable areas of Silchar, has increased significantly.

The DDMA has advised residents to avoid venturing into waterlogged areas, keep electrical appliances turned off in flooded zones, and store important items in elevated places. Citizens are also encouraged to keep emergency supplies—such as dry food, potable water, essential medicines, and communication devices—readily available.

People have been strictly warned against walking or driving through submerged roads, as such actions can lead to serious accidents or leave individuals stranded. The public is also urged to rely only on verified updates from the District Administration, DDMA, and Silchar Municipal Corporation, and to refrain from spreading rumours or misinformation.

All line departments have been directed to remain on high alert and take proactive measures to address any emerging situation. The District Administration assured that the situation is being closely monitored and that every effort is being made to safeguard public life and property.

For assistance during emergencies, citizens can reach out to the District Control Room at 03842-239249 / 03842-234005 or the Mobile Helpline at 94016-24141. Emails may also be directed to ddma-cachar@assam.gov.in.

The administration has called for the full cooperation of the public during this period of weather-related disruption and urged all to act responsibly to stay safe.
