DC Mridul Yadav leads homage as Assam mourns its iconic singer

Silchar: The Cachar District Administration on Saturday held a solemn ceremony to honour the memory of legendary singer Zubeen Garg, whose sudden death in Singapore has left Assam and the wider music world in mourning.
The tribute took place at the office of the District Commissioner, where Mridul Yadav, IAS, offered floral homage to the late artist’s portrait. Senior officials and staff of the administration joined in paying their respects.
Speaking on the occasion, DC Yadav praised Zubeen Garg’s extraordinary contribution to Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi music. “His music transcended boundaries and united hearts,” he said, noting how the singer carried Assam’s cultural heritage to a global audience.

The ceremony reflected the deep affection of Cachar’s people for Garg, who was remembered not only as a singer but as a symbol of hope and inspiration. Officials recalled his timeless songs and powerful stage presence, describing his voice as one that brought joy and belonging to countless households. Prayers were offered for the eternal peace of his soul.
Those present included Additional District Commissioner Dr. Khaleda Sultana Ahmed, Co-District Commissioner of Lakhipur Dhruvajyoti Hazarika, Additional District Commissioner Hemanga Nobis, Assistant Commissioners Ashish Bidyadhar Unhale, Deepa Das, Bonnykha Chetia, Cultural Development Officer Snehangshu Roy, and other staff members of the district administration.
Saturday’s event also underscored the administration’s commitment to preserving the legacy of cultural icons. Officials stressed that Zubeen Garg’s work will remain a permanent part of Assam’s artistic memory.
Garg passed away in Singapore on Friday following a tragic accident. The Government of Assam has declared state mourning from September 20 to 22. During this period, no official entertainment, dinners, or ceremonial functions will be held, and Seva Saptah programmes involving public events have been postponed as a mark of respect.
