Distributes food supplies, demands urgent bridge repair

Katigorah : Due to road and bridge collapses, over a hundred truck drivers and their assistants stranded at the Assam-Meghalaya border received food supplies from the Cachar district administration. On Wednesday, emergency ration kits were distributed to around 350 truck drivers who had been stuck with their vehicles from Gumrah to Kalainchhara.

For the past month, the Gammon Bridge connecting Katigorah and Badarpur has been closed. Additionally, the collapse of the Harang Bridge at Bhangarpar and a landslide on National Highway 27 have severely disrupted the entire transportation network. As a result, the truck drivers faced an acute shortage of food and drinking water.

Under the direction of Cachar Deputy Commissioner Mridul Yadav, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Circle Officer Dr. Robert Toolo, and volunteers jointly carried out the ration distribution. Each kit contained 5 kg of rice, 2 kg of lentils, 2 liters of oil, 1 kg of salt, 2 packets of biscuits, and 5 liters of water.

The drivers expressed relief upon receiving the aid and urged the authorities to repair the roads and bridges swiftly so that normal traffic movement can resume. While the administration’s humanitarian effort was appreciated, a long-term solution is now the need of the hour.
