Silchar: With the tricolour already fluttering across the cityscape, the Cachar district administration has unveiled comprehensive plans to mark the 79th Independence Day with grandeur and patriotic fervour.
A preparatory meeting chaired by District Commissioner Mridul Yadav was held on Monday at the new conference hall of the DC’s office to chalk out the schedule of events. The meeting witnessed participation from key stakeholders including officials from civil, police, military and paramilitary departments, as well as representatives from civil society and the business community all united under one goal: to make the national celebration a memorable one.
Addressing the gathering, DC Yadav remarked, “Independence Day is more than just a date—it’s a tribute to the sacrifices that secured our freedom. I call upon every resident of Cachar to participate in the celebrations with pride and enthusiasm. Let us honour our past and inspire our future.”
He reviewed departmental preparations and directed that all arrangements be completed by August 13. Following detailed deliberations, the Police Parade Ground in Silchar was finalised as the main venue for the ceremonial flag hoisting and parade.
As per the approved schedule, patriotic music will be broadcast from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM, courtesy of the Regional Office of Information and Public Relations, Barak Valley Zone. At 7:00 AM, citizens are encouraged to hoist the national flag at their homes and business establishments, followed by official flag hoisting at government offices and educational institutions at 7:45 AM, accompanied by the National Anthem.
Floral tributes will be offered at Gandhi Bagh, first at the statue of the Father of the Nation at 8:35 AM, followed by homage at the Swahid Tarpan memorial at 8:45 AM. The ceremonial VVIP flag hoisting is scheduled for 9:00 AM, followed by a combined parade featuring contingents from the CRPF, Assam Police, Home Guards, 6th AP Battalion, NCC, Scouts and Guides.
A cultural programme showcasing the vibrant ethnic diversity of the district will be held at the Police Parade Ground. Later in the day, an exhibition football match between the District Bar Association and District Sports Association will take place at 4:00 PM at the DSA Ground.
To cap off the celebrations, government buildings, statues, traffic rotaries, and even private residences will be illuminated from 6:00 PM onwards, transforming Silchar into a glowing tribute to the nation.
Among the key attendees at the meeting were Additional District Commissioners Roktim Baruah (ACS), Hemanga Navis (ACS), District Development Commissioner Norsing Bey (ACS), Assistant Commissioners Jonali Devi (ACS), Bonnykha Chetia (ACS), Anjali Kumari (ACS), Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen (APS), and other senior officers.
