Silchar: Across Silchar and its surrounding areas, the 79th Independence Day was celebrated on Friday with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural performances, social initiatives, and community service activities, reflecting the region’s deep patriotic spirit.
At Budhurail’s Keshav Shobha Kuti Vidya Mandir, headmistress Kanan Das Choudhury unfurled the Tricolour, setting the tone for a day of patriotic songs, dances, dramas, and sports events. In her speech, she honoured the courage and sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters and urged all citizens to uphold the nation’s dignity.

In Katigorah, the Burunga Industry Land Owners Association marked the occasion with the hoisting of the national flag by Assam Government Secretary and association adviser F.R. Laskar.
The celebration also saw the inauguration of the association’s permanent office by president Subal Sinha, attended by several dignitaries.

The day’s observances extended to social outreach programmes. At Sonai Road, the Lifeline Helping Hand Society celebrated at its de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, using the occasion to raise awareness against substance abuse.
In Bhangarpar, the Happy Foundation’s de-addiction centre combined Independence Day festivities with indoor games, meditation, and spiritual sessions conducted by the Prajapita Brahma Kumaris.
Security forces joined in the celebrations with equal enthusiasm. At Kashipur, the 147 CRPF Battalion organised a ceremonial parade and flag hoisting led by Commandant Bruno A., later celebrating their first-place win in the district-level Independence Day parade held at Silchar DSA.
