Silchar: The Department of Women and Child Development, Cachar, marked International Girl Child Day 2025 with a special programme at S. M. Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar, on Friday. As part of the Government of India’s flagship Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative, essential kits were distributed to five newborn girls—symbolizing the government’s continued commitment to promoting gender equality and empowering women from birth.

The event was attended by Deepa Das, ACS, Assistant Commissioner-cum-In-Charge District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), and Dr. Arup Patwa, Superintendent of S. M. Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar. Members of the Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women (HEW) Team, Cachar, also took part, highlighting coordinated efforts toward women and child welfare.

During the programme, the dignitaries personally handed over essential kits to the mothers of the newborn girls in the hospital’s maternity ward. The distribution was followed by an interactive session with the mothers, where officials shared details about welfare schemes under Mission Shakti. The session aimed to raise awareness about government initiatives supporting women and children while celebrating the birth of girl children as a moment of pride and hope.

Speaking at the event, Assistant Commissioner and In-Charge DSWO Deepa Das said such initiatives play a vital role in strengthening the value of the girl child in society, reducing gender bias, and ensuring equal access to education, healthcare, and empowerment opportunities. She emphasized the department’s commitment to building a society where every girl child is celebrated and given the opportunity to reach her full potential.

Officials noted that these initiatives reflect the government’s larger mission to ensure that every girl child is welcomed, valued, and supported from the very beginning of life.

It is worth mentioning that Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a flagship programme of the Government of India focused on addressing the declining child sex ratio and improving the status of girl children through better access to education, healthcare, and protection against discrimination. The programme seeks to change mindsets and create an environment where daughters are equally cherished and empowered.

The event received an enthusiastic response from the families present at the hospital. Mothers expressed appreciation for the government’s outreach and symbolic gesture, which served not only as practical support but also as a message celebrating the birth of every girl child.
