Silchar: On the occasion of Amar Bhasha Shahid Diwas, the Barak Nagarik Sansad organised a commemorative discussion at the Silchar Press Club on Monday, where speakers voiced deep concern over increasing linguistic aggression and emphasized the urgent need to protect the rights of all mother tongues.
The day marks the martyrdom of Jaganmoy Deb (Jagan) and Dibyendu Das (Jishu), who sacrificed their lives on July 21, 1986, in Karimganj while defending the linguistic identity of the region. A solemn tribute was paid to their memory during the programme.
The theme of the discussion was “Linguistic Aggression and the Challenges of Our Time”. Presiding over the event was noted social thinker Sanjit Debnath. The speakers included Shankar Dey, General Secretary of Barak Nagarik Sansad; Professor Subrata Deb; journalist Asimlal Acharjee; social activist Nabarun Dey Choudhury; and Sudip Singh, among others.
The programme began with an inaugural song rendered by artiste Shantikumar Bhattacharjee, setting a solemn and reflective tone for the event.
