Silchar: The Bhasha Shahid Station Shahid Smarak Samiti has called on the people of Barak Valley to join the citizens’ meeting on Sunday, November 30, describing it as an important step toward securing the long-pending Gazette Notification to rename Silchar Railway Station after the language martyrs.
The meeting will begin at 11.30 am at Gandhi Bhawan. In a statement issued on Saturday, the committee said the decision to hold the meeting was taken unanimously and reflects its commitment to democratic action.
The group reiterated its demand that the state government publish the Gazette Notification without delay, a point it had also highlighted during a media briefing on Friday. The committee noted that close to 472 individuals from across the valley, cutting across political, linguistic, and social lines, have already joined the effort to make the programme a success.
It stressed that personal or political differences should not get in the way of a collective civic demand. The statement also criticised attempts to create confusion or negativity around the meeting and urged everyone to maintain a respectful approach. Ideological disagreements are normal, it said, but undermining a democratic initiative serves no purpose.
Reiterating the urgency of the issue, the committee said the demand to name Silchar Railway Station after the language martyrs reflects the sentiments of the entire valley. It urged residents to participate in large numbers on Sunday to help move the demand forward.
