Silchar: Assam University marked Constitution Day with a focused programme of lectures, student activities and a public reading of the Preamble at the Department of Political Science on Wednesday. The event was organised jointly by the department and the Dr Ambedkar Chair.

Here’s what mattered. Dr Deepshikha Bhattacharjee from the Department of Law opened the academic sessions with a talk on the Basic Structure doctrine and why it continues to anchor constitutional interpretation. She traced its evolution and explained how it shapes the limits of legislative power.

Professor Anup Kumar Dey, Dean of Students’ Welfare, spoke on constitutional morality and stressed that decolonisation is not a closed chapter but a continuing responsibility for institutions and citizens.

The head of the Department of Political Science, Professor Debotosh Chakraborty, led a session titled The Artistic Soul and Secular Fabric of the Indian Constitution. He walked students through the ideas embedded in the Constitution’s visual and conceptual design.

A replica of the original Constitution was displayed at the venue, offering students a closer look at its artwork and historical context. The programme also featured a quiz and student presentations on constitutional themes. It concluded with participants reading the Preamble as part of the national pledge.
