Silchar: A development-oriented public meeting held on Wednesday at Sonacherra village under Haticherra in the 115 No. Udharbond Legislative Assembly Constituency saw a strong demand from locals to nominate senior BJP leader Biswajit Das as the party’s candidate for the 2026 Assembly elections.
Organised by residents of Sonacherra, Rupacherra, and Amarnagar, the meeting drew several community members and local leaders. Speakers at the event praised the Bharatiya Janata Party government for the visible progress achieved in the region under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
They pointed out that the area was earlier part of the Borkhola constituency and was later brought under Udharbond following boundary realignments by the present government—a move welcomed by the local population. The speakers contrasted the BJP’s record with that of the Congress era, alleging that during the tenure of former Borkhola MLA Misbahul Islam Laskar, the region saw little to no development.
Participants said that “development” would be the defining issue in the 2026 Assembly polls and expressed confidence that the BJP would return to power in Assam on the strength of its performance and people-centric initiatives.
The meeting ended with a unanimous resolution urging the party’s leadership to nominate Biswajit Das, a two-time mandal president and lifelong BJP worker, as the candidate from Udharbond.
Speakers highlighted Das’s long-standing dedication to the party and his consistent efforts for the constituency’s growth. They recalled that even after being denied a ticket from Borkhola in the previous election, Das remained loyal and continued working for the organisation.
Currently, Das is actively engaging with people across Udharbond through extensive outreach and campaign activities and is said to be receiving strong public support.
Among those present at the meeting were Kiran Das, Nimai Kurmi, Bablu Urang, Malati Urang, and Biswajit Urang. Through the media, they appealed to Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the State BJP President, and the District President to consider Biswajit Das’s name for the party ticket, citing his dedication, discipline, and contribution to the BJP’s growth in the region.
