Silchar: The Cachar District Administration on Friday carried out one of the state’s largest plantation drives as part of Seva Hi Samarpan, Seva Saptah. In a single day, 75,000 saplings were planted across 1,000 schools in the district, turning the initiative into a district-wide green movement.
The central programme was held at Government Girls’ Higher Secondary & Multi Purpose School, Silchar, where Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha and District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, IAS, led the plantation. Their joint participation set the tone for the campaign, underscoring the link between governance and environmental stewardship.

Senior officials including Palve Vijay Trimbak, IFS, Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial), Cachar; Bonnykha Chetia, ACS, Assistant Commissioner; and Ganesh Harijan, AES, Inspector of Schools, Cachar, also joined the drive. Teachers and students took active part, turning the event into a lively mix of service, learning, and ecological care.
Speaking on the occasion, District Commissioner Yadav said the initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to combine public service with environmental responsibility. “This is not just about planting trees, but about nurturing awareness in young minds, so that the sense of responsibility towards nature passes on to future generations,” he said.

MP Purkayastha praised the effort as “a perfect blend of service to society and service to nature,” adding that involving students makes the initiative truly impactful. “These saplings are not just trees, but promises for a greener and healthier tomorrow. I congratulate the administration for its vision and scale, and urge our youth to nurture them as they would nurture their dreams,” he remarked.
Under the campaign, each school in Cachar district has received 75 saplings to plant and care for, making the effort a landmark step in the state’s Seva Saptah programme. The administration expressed gratitude to all participating officials, schools, and citizens for making the drive a success.
Day 3 of Seva Hi Samarpan, Seva Saptah thus marked not just an environmental initiative, but also a celebration of community service and shared responsibility.
