SILCHAR : The lawyers of Silchar have once again placed their trust in the Dulal–Niladri duo, re-electing veteran advocate Dulal Mitra as president and experienced leader Niladri Roy as general secretary of the Silchar District Bar Association.
Friday’s elections turned into a high-voltage affair, particularly in the general secretary’s contest, which saw a tense mentor-versus-disciple battle. Niladri’s protégé, Amalava Das, pushed his mentor to the limit in a neck-and-neck race, eventually losing by just 18 votes. A similarly close fight was witnessed in the cultural secretary contest, where Jhimli Pal edged past rival Suparna Dutta Choudhury by a mere four votes.
This is the second consecutive term for Dulal and Niladri, who also secured the top posts in the 2023 elections. In Friday’s results, Dulal Mitra polled 320 votes, defeating Sumita Shome Poddar, who garnered 273. For the general secretary’s post, Niladri Roy secured 227 votes, with Amalava Das receiving 209 and Abdul Hai Laskar 159.
In the vice-president’s race, Pankaj Kanti Dey registered a sweeping victory with 301 votes against nearest rival Subhasish Chakraborty’s 106. Jyotiprakash Bhattacharjee and Sukumar Dutta received 86 and 70 votes respectively. In the women’s reserved joint secretary category, Panchami Nath triumphed with 279 votes, defeating Soma Das (211) and Kalpita Sen (90).
For the administrative assistant secretary post, Debdulal Choudhury won comfortably with 350 votes, leaving rival Biswadeep Chakraborty at 226. In the cultural assistant secretary contest, Jhimli Pal polled 236 votes, narrowly beating Suparna Dutta Choudhury’s 232. The third contender, Lipika Biswas, secured 95 votes.
Three candidates were elected unopposed: Tuhina Sharma (women’s reserved vice-president), Abhijit Kar (unreserved joint secretary), and Ramesh Singh (assistant sports secretary).
Polling began at 11 a.m. and continued till 3:30 p.m., with 607 lawyers casting their votes. Counting began at 4 p.m., and the results were announced at around 8:15 p.m. by returning officer Dipak Deb, assisted by Soumen Choudhury, Tinku Mazumder, Azad Laskar, and Joydeep Biswas.
