Cartel Violence Erupts Across Mexico

KRC TIMES Desk

Mexico’s most wanted crime boss, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, has been killed in a military operation in western Mexico. Oseguera was the leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to the Mexican army, the 59 year old was wounded during a gunfight with security forces in Tapalpa, located in Jalisco. He later died while being flown to Mexico City. Officials say the operation marks one of the biggest blows to organised crime since the arrests of Joaquín Guzmán and Ismael Zambada García.

Security forces from multiple federal units took part in the raid. Six suspected cartel gunmen were killed.Three soldiers were injured. Two suspects were arrested. Security teams also recovered a stockpile of heavy weapons, including rocket launchers.

Soon after news of Oseguera’s death spread, cartel fighters began retaliatory attacks. Violence Spreads. Violence quickly spread across at least five states.

Armed groups:

  • Burned vehicles
  • Blocked more than 20 highways
  • Set shops and petrol pumps on fire
  • Major cities including Guadalajara and tourist hotspot Puerto Vallarta saw panic.
  • Public transport services were halted. Shops closed. Streets emptied.
  • Flights were also affected. Air Canada suspended services to Puerto Vallarta.
  • Several football matches and public events were cancelled.
  • Travel Alerts Issued
  • The United States and Canada advised their citizens to stay indoors in affected regions.
  • The US had earlier offered a reward of 15 million dollars for information leading to Oseguera’s arrest.
  • Former US President Donald Trump had recently designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organisation.
  • A Major Cartel Figure
  • Formed in 2009, CJNG grew into one of Mexico’s most violent criminal groups.
  • It was involved in trafficking:
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Methamphetamine
  • Fentanyl
  • Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged citizens to remain calm.
  • Security forces continue to patrol affected areas as authorities try to restore normal life.

El Mencho’s killing is a major moment in Mexico’s battle against organised crime. Yet the swift backlash shows the deep reach of cartel power.
