Contractor’s bulldozer flees after spotting journalists’ cameras

Silchar: Allegations of financial irregularities have surfaced in a road construction project at Boali Konkapuri village under East Sonai, triggering outrage among local residents.

According to sources, the Public Works Department (PWD) sanctioned Rs.8.81 lakh in the 2024–25 fiscal year for constructing a new road from Sudhanya Road in Konkapuri village to the residence of a local resident named Madhu.

However, locals alleged that instead of working on the sanctioned road, the contractor began work on a nearby road already in good condition, apparently in an attempt to siphon off public funds.

When villagers noticed the irregularity, they rushed to the spot and protested, questioning the purpose of repairing a road that required no maintenance. The contractor reportedly told them that the sanctioned project had not yet started.

Later, citing the name of the local MLA, he resumed work by dumping around ten truckloads of poor-quality construction material.

The move angered residents, who demanded proper utilization of the sanctioned funds and the completion of the actual road project. “The entire amount must be spent on the designated road, not on a random stretch,” the villagers said, adding that this was the first time since independence that funds had been sanctioned for the repair of that particular road.

They have called for a detailed inquiry into the alleged misuse of government funds. Meanwhile, in a dramatic turn of events, the contractor’s bulldozer operators reportedly fled the site as soon as they noticed journalists filming the scene, leaving the work abruptly halted.
