Silchar: The Silchar Netaji Murti Nabanirman O Sthapana Committee has lined up a series of events ahead of the much-anticipated inauguration of the new statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in the town.
Speaking at a press conference at the Gandhi Bhawan Library on Sunday, Committee convener and Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty announced that the final round of an essay writing competition will be held on August 19 at Silchar DSA. Registration will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the competition at 10 a.m.
Chakraborty informed that preliminary rounds, held on August 7, witnessed the participation of nearly 55,000 students—214 schools from Cachar, 25 from Sribhumi and 15 from Hailakandi. The top three winners from each zone will now compete in the final stage.
He also recalled that in 2023 the Committee had successfully organised speech and art competitions on Netaji along with a quiz festival, which drew overwhelming response from students and youth.
On preparations for the statue, the convener said, “The Netaji statue has arrived from Mysore, and we are working continuously on the pedestal. The third step has already been fitted.” The statue will be formally unveiled on August 31 at 4 p.m. by Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, who will attend as chief guest. Noted sculptor Arun Yogiraj, who created the statue, is also expected in Silchar on August 30.
Committee co-convener Uttam Kumar Saha praised MLA Dipayan Chakraborty’s leadership and underscored the challenges faced during the installation process. He appealed to citizens from all sections of society to join the ceremony and make it a memorable event.
Among those present at the press meet were committee members Nihar Ranjan Pal, Debojyoti Swami, Debashish Shome, Arijit Goswami, Joydeep Chakraborty and Satananda Bhattacharjee.
