Silchar: In a major push to upgrade Silchar’s urban infrastructure, foundation stones were laid for two vital civic projects over the weekend under the Assam Government’s flagship schemes Mukhya Mantri Pakipath Nirman Achani (MMPNA) and Mukhya Mantrir Nagariya Pakipath Nirman Achani (MMNPPNA). The initiatives aim to enhance road connectivity and address longstanding drainage problems in the town.

On Saturday evening, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty inaugurated the much-anticipated drainage and road construction work on Tarapur Lakhidhar Road, fulfilling a long-standing demand of local residents. The project is expected to significantly improve both road conditions and stormwater management, especially during the monsoon season.

The foundation stone-laying ceremony drew several dignitaries including BJP Mandal President Hirok Choudhury, District Sports Association President Shibabrata Dutta, former DSA President Babul Hore, former Municipal Commissioner Madhumita Sharma, as well as social workers Bhola Purkayastha and Samrat Choudhury.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Chakraborty reiterated the government’s focus on resolving civic challenges through sustainable infrastructure. “Improving drainage and road networks is not just about convenience it’s about safeguarding health, mobility, and overall quality of life. These projects are stepping stones toward inclusive development,” he stated.

In a second development, Chakraborty also laid the foundation stone for a covered drainage project from Co-operative Lane endpoint to Rangirkhal, with a sanctioned budget of ₹84.99 lakh under Package No. SE/SIL/MMNPPNA/23-24/2. The project will be executed by the Executive Engineer of PWRD, Silchar and Udharbond Territorial Road Division, and aims to curb the recurring issue of waterlogging in the area.

“This is part of our comprehensive plan to modernise Silchar’s drainage system and provide residents with lasting solutions,” the MLA said, adding that the administration is committed to maintaining quality and ensuring timely execution.

Work on both projects is slated to begin soon, with authorities promising close supervision to uphold construction standards and deadlines. These initiatives mark yet another stride towards building a more resilient and livable Silchar.
