Silchar: Cachar district’s Frenchnagar resident Annada Shankar Das, popularly known as Apu, lost his life in a tragic road accident on Wednesday night, casting a pall of grief over the Dhalai region. He was 50.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 9.30 pm at Lailapur on National Highway 306. A speeding Bolero pickup truck (registration S-11/FC-4817), heading towards Silchar, collided head-on with the two-wheeler ridden by Apu.
The impact threw him several feet away, and he died on the spot. The driver fled immediately after the incident. Police from Dholai reached the site soon after and sent the body to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
Apu was the elder son of Anil Chandra Das of Frenchnagar village. A long-time swayamsevak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he also served as the manager of Star Bricks Industries. His sudden demise has left the community in deep shock.
On Thursday morning, relatives, friends, well-wishers, and a large number of local residents gathered at his residence to pay their respects. Political and social leaders also visited or expressed condolences, including BJP’s Cachar district executive member Amiya Kanti Das, BJP leader Amolendu Das, Congress leader Dr. Anup Kumar Roy, Assam University officer Biswajit Das, former Channighat GP president Rajib Uddin Laskar, and several panchayat representatives.
Condolences also poured in from Dholai MLA Nihar Ranjan Das, VHP South Assam president advocate Shantanu Nayek, RSS South Cachar district executive Asim Biswas, VHP South Cachar secretary advocate Rajat Shil, Matribhoomi Social Organisation president Sitangshu Das, and RSS volunteer advocate Subhash Nath. They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and offered sympathy to the bereaved family.
Apu is survived by his parents, wife, a son, a daughter, two brothers, two sisters, and a large circle of admirers.
