Silchar: The spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi has taken over Silchar, with community and household festivities that began on Tuesday continuing into Wednesday in full swing. Major puja pandals across the town have opened, drawing crowds of devotees and curious onlookers alike.
On Sonai Road, the Sarbojanin Ganesh Chaturthi Mahotsav was inaugurated by Swami Ganadhishananda ji Maharaj, secretary of Silchar Ramakrishna Mission Sevashram. After cutting the ribbon, he offered the first prayers to Lord Ganesha. Speaking on the occasion, he reminded devotees of Ganesha’s role as the remover of obstacles and bringer of prosperity, and prayed for peace and harmony in the community.
Prof. Debotosh Chakraborty and Mithun Nath, also present, underlined how Ganesha’s worship is believed to dispel negativity and invite success, as recorded in Hindu scriptures.
Adviser Shyamal Banik and general secretary Bacchu Pal noted that this marks the fourth year of the Sarbojanin celebration. The four-day festival features daily anjali at noon, evening aarti, cultural events with folk artists from across Barak Valley, dance competitions, and the distribution of mahaprasad. This year, decorative lighting has been given special emphasis.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, Ekok Sangha of Subhash Nagar launched its first Ganesh Chaturdashi celebration. Swami Ganadhishananda ji Maharaj also inaugurated this pandal, where a 12-foot idol has been installed with elaborate lighting. The three-day programme includes mangalarati, devotional songs, homa yajna, and evening cultural performances. About 50 members of the association worked on the preparations.
With multiple organisations stepping forward, Silchar is experiencing one of its most vibrant Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in recent years—marked by devotion, colour, music, and a strong sense of community.
