What is the SIT doing so far that we still have no clue about Garg’s death?” he asked

Guwahati : Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday criticised the BJP-led Assam government for what he called a lack of transparency in the ongoing probe into the death of singer Zubeen Garg, saying that more than 40 days have passed without any clear answers.

Speaking at a party event where several BJP members joined the Congress, Gogoi questioned the role of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to investigate the case. “It has been more than 40 days, yet we still do not know what exactly happened to him. Instead of diverting attention, the government must ensure justice. What is the SIT doing so far that we still have no clue about Garg’s death?” he asked.

The deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha alleged that the government was using the SIT to “target intellectuals, artists, and opposition leaders” rather than to uncover the truth behind the singer’s death.

Gogoi also launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of corruption and misuse of power. “People are fed up with Himanta Biswa Sarma. His family and close associates have amassed illegal wealth. That’s why many BJP leaders and workers are leaving the party, which has now turned into a limited company serving only a few,” Gogoi said.

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most popular and influential singers, died on September 19 in Singapore while swimming in the sea during his visit to attend the 4th North East India Festival (NEIF). His sudden death triggered public outrage and widespread speculation, leading to more than 60 FIRs being filed across the state.

A Special Investigation Team under the state CID is currently probing the incident. So far, seven people, including NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, have been arrested in connection with the case.

The state government has yet to respond to Gogoi’s allegations.
