A memorial was held in front of the university’s main gate, where Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niranjan Roy, Registrar Dr. Bidyut Kanti Pal, Academic Registrar Dr. Abhijit Nath, Dean of Students’ Welfare Dr. Joydeep Pal, Coordinator of Commerce and Management Prof. Dr. Sanjib Bhattacharjee, Coordinator of Arts and Humanities Prof. Ashraf Hussain, President of Asom Sahitya Sabha’s Cachar District Committee and senior professor of Commerce Dr. Yogeswar Barman, along with faculty members, staff, and a large number of students lit lamps and offered floral tributes before the late singer’s portrait.

Later, homage was also paid in the university’s conference hall and auditorium in an atmosphere filled with emotion.

Remembering the artist, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Niranjan Roy said, “Zubeen Garg was not just an artist, he was the pride of Assam. His sudden demise has left the entire nation in mourning. His magical voice bound millions of hearts together.”

Registrar Dr. Bidyut Kanti Pal recalled Garg’s deep personal connection with Barak Valley, noting that he spent part of his childhood in present-day Sribhumi, Karimganj. He added that Garg sang in nearly 40 languages and recorded over 38,000 songs. “His extraordinary contribution to India’s cultural heritage will be remembered with gratitude by generations to come,” he said.

The university family expressed solidarity with the grief of Assam following Garg’s untimely death. As a mark of respect, Guru Charan University postponed field trips of the Sanskrit, Hindi, Manipuri, Persian, and Assamese departments.

The annual freshmen’s welcome programme Arambh, scheduled for Sunday under the Department of Mass Communication, was also deferred in line with the state government’s three-day mourning. Academic Registrar Dr. Abhijit Nath confirmed that the university would observe the state-declared mourning period in full.
