Guwahati: Assam is set to make cricketing history as Guwahati prepares to host its first-ever Test match, with India taking on South Africa. In a rare departure from traditional scheduling, the match will introduce a ‘tea before lunch’ format — a first in Test cricket.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that the change was made to adjust for Guwahati’s early sunsets, ensuring maximum play during daylight hours. Officials said the move could serve as a model for future matches in regions with similar conditions.
The five-day contest will begin at 9:00 AM IST. The first session will run from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by a 20-minute tea break until 11:20 AM. The second session will continue from 11:20 AM to 1:20 PM, after which players will take a 40-minute lunch break. The final session is scheduled from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.
The BCCI said the modified timing aims to minimize the impact of early darkness, which is typical of the Northeast during this time of year.
Cricket enthusiasts across Assam are calling it a landmark moment — not just for Guwahati, but for the state’s growing presence on India’s sporting map.
