Silchar: In a significant breakthrough in the ongoing crackdown against drug trafficking, Cachar Police seized heroin worth approximately Rs 5.55 crore from the Silchar-Aizawl bypass in Ramnagar early Friday morning. One person has been arrested in connection with the seizure.

Acting on a reliable tip-off, a police team led by Cachar Superintendent of Police (SP) Numal Mahatta intercepted a Bolero vehicle suspected to be transporting narcotics. During the search, the police recovered 1.109 kilograms of heroin, cleverly concealed in a specially modified chamber inside the vehicle. The contraband was packed in 100 soap cases.

The arrested individual has been identified as Zangminlien Baite (22), a resident of Churachandpur in Manipur. According to SP Mahatta, the vehicle was en route from Churachandpur and was intercepted near the Ramnagar stretch of the Silchar-Aizawl bypass, under the jurisdiction of Silchar Police Station.

“The operation was carried out based on credible intelligence input. The heroin was hidden with the intention to evade detection. Preliminary testing using a drug detection kit confirmed the substance to be heroin,” SP Mahatta said.

The seizure was made in the presence of independent witnesses, in accordance with legal procedures. Initial investigation suggests that the heroin consignment originated from Churachandpur and was being smuggled into Assam, likely for further distribution.

Cachar Police have been intensifying their vigilance along the inter-state borders, particularly at Jirighat (bordering Manipur) and Lailapur (bordering Mizoram), in response to the surge in cross-border drug trafficking. Several such attempts have been foiled in recent months, highlighting the district’s vulnerability as a transit route for narcotics.

Further investigation into the network behind the consignment is currently underway.
