Silchar: In a significant political development, a number of independent Anchalik Panchayat members from Banskandi Development Block have officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a major shift in the local political landscape. The move was made public on Monday through a statement issued on the BJP’s verified social media platform.
The newly inducted members include Sabina Habib Barbhuiya and her husband Shamsul Islam Barbhuiya, Sultana Begum Mazumdar, Anjumnara Naz Laskar and her representative Alok Laskar, and Farooq Ahmed Choudhury. They were welcomed into the party by BJP’s Cachar district president Rupam Saha in the presence of senior party leaders Amitava Rai, Nazrul Islam Laskar, and others.
Party sources revealed that the leaders were motivated by the BJP’s ideology, leadership, and its focus on development. Their induction is seen as a strategic move to bolster the BJP’s grassroots strength in the region.
Interestingly, just a month ago, under the guidance of Sonai MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya, the independent members had initiated efforts to form a board with the support of a Trinamool Congress candidate. However, the Congress reportedly intervened by wooing away the Trinamool member, derailing the proposed alliance.
With the board formation plan having failed, political observers believe the independent members chose to align with the BJP to establish themselves as a strong opposition force in the local governance structure. Their entry into the party is expected to reshape the political dynamics within the Anchalik Panchayat in the days ahead.
