India clinches 15th Manipur Polo International title, beats Colombia in final

IMPHAL: The 15th Manipur Polo International wrapped up on Sunday at Mapal Kangjeibung with India-B (Manipur) lifting the title after an 8–5 win over Colombia. The tournament returned this year after a two-year break.

The Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association organised the event, which began on 22 November at the world’s oldest active polo ground. Five teams took part: the United States, Colombia, India-A, India-C (Chhattisgarh) and India-B (Manipur). Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the final.

He and First Lady Jyoti Bhalla later presented the trophies to the winners and runners-up. Steering Committee Chairman Prof. Ch. Priyoranjan Singh called this edition one of the most gripping in recent years.

He said Manipur’s players have reached a level where they can compete with established polo nations like Colombia and the United States.

He welcomed the tournament’s return after disruptions caused by the pandemic and hoped to see more international participation in the coming years. Priyoranjan added that the continued rise of polo in the state would help preserve the Manipuri pony, which re- mains central to the sport’s heritage

The presence of international teams added significance to the event. The matches also highlighted Manipur’s rich equestrian heritage and its global recognition as the birthplace of modern polo. After the match, the Governor and the First Lady presented prizes to the winners and participating teams, appreciating their sportsmanship and dedication.

The Governor then declared the tournament closed. The 15th Manipur Polo International returned this year after a two-year break, revived with renewed energy under the Governor’s leadership. The President of the Manipur Pony Society, dignitaries and local spectators were also present.

The tournament was organized by the Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association and featured five teams USA, Colombia, India A (Indian Polo Association), India B (Manipur) and India C (Chhattisgarh).
