Agartala : The Institution of Engineers (India), Tripura State Centre organised the 8th M. L. Dasgupta Memorial Lecture at its Seminar Hall, Pandit Nehru Complex, Agartala, on Monday. The event witnessed the gracious presence of distinguished members, dignitaries, faculty, students, and invitees.

The programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Prof. (Dr.) Priyanath Das, FIE, Honorary Secretary, IEI (India), Tripura State Centre, warmly greeted the gathering and set the academic tone of the session.

Er. Paramananda Sarkar Banerjee, FIE, Chairman, IEI (India), Tripura State Centre, in his Presidential Address, reflected upon his journey as a student under the mentorship of Late Prof. M. L. Dasgupta during the formative years of Tripura Engineering College. He vividly recalled how the institution evolved from a modest setup with a single tin-roofed structure to the present multi-storeyed campus of NIT Agartala.

He further emphasised the life and contributions of the Late Prof. Dasgupta, describing him as a visionary academic leader who laid the foundation of modern engineering education in Tripura.

The Guest of Honour and Keynote Speaker, Er. Biswajit Basu, Managing Director, Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL), delivered the Memorial Lecture on the theme “Future Prospects of Hydro Power in Tripura: Challenges and Opportunities”.

In his address, he highlighted the current energy scenario of India and Tripura, underlining the potential and benefits of pumped storage plants (PSPs) as a sustainable solution for energy security.

Er. Basu also provided an elaborate description of the upcoming Longthrai Valley Pumped Storage Project in Tripura, planned with (4 × 200 MW) units, which, once commissioned, will significantly reshape the renewable energy landscape of the State and strengthen its role in India’s clean energy transition.

The event concluded with the felicitation of academic toppers from leading engineering institutions of Tripura for their outstanding performance in 2024.

The Memorial Lecture, instituted in honour of the Late Prof. M. L. Dasgupta, the founding Principal of Tripura Engineering College (now NIT Agartala), continues to inspire the engineering fraternity by fostering reflection on emerging challenges and opportunities in the field of engineering and technology.
