SILCHAR : AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya’s alleged ambitions to contest the next elections on an AGP ticket have been dismissed as unfounded by Ayesha Sultana Choudhury, Central General Secretary of the Minority Council an affiliate of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
Addressing the media at her residence in Aulia Bazar, Silchar, Choudhury launched a scathing attack on Barbhuiya, describing him as “the most corrupt and anti-development legislator” in Sonai’s political history. She claimed that successive leaderships from both the Congress and AIUDF have misled voters in the constituency, with Barbhuiya allegedly continuing that trend.
“Karim Uddin Barbhuiya once held a close association with former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, but over the years, he has failed to deliver on development promises,” Choudhury said. “Despite being in office for more than four years, even basic infrastructure like roads remains incomplete, while sectors like education, healthcare, and governance have continued to decline.”
She attributed Sonai’s stagnation to what she termed the “communal and exploitative politics” of both Congress and AIUDF. Citing the Dhanerhori firing incident during the tenure of former MLA Aminul Haque Laskar, Choudhury said such episodes remain etched in public memory as signs of administrative failure.
On speculation of Barbhuiya switching allegiance to AGP, Choudhury firmly refuted the possibility. “AGP President and Assam Minister Atul Bora has already clarified party tickets are not like cinema tickets. Only genuine party workers will be considered,” she said.
Looking ahead to the next assembly elections, Choudhury said the people of Sonai are ready for change. “The public is disillusioned with the corruption and misrule under current and former AIUDF legislators. Voters are determined to support the AGP and bring in transparent governance,” she added.
