Eco-friendly transit option aimed at reducing congestion and pollution while offering a smooth commuting experience

Kochi: In a landmark move for urban transport, Kochi is set to introduce India’s first light tram system — a modern, eco-friendly transit option aimed at reducing congestion and pollution while offering a smooth commuting experience.
The upcoming light tram will operate on a 6.2-kilometre route and carry up to 240 passengers per trip. The service is designed to be fast, clean, and energy-efficient, marking a new chapter in sustainable public transport in India.
While it’s unfortunate that Kolkata’s historic tram system once a proud symbol of India’s urban mobility — could not be sustained, Kochi’s initiative revives the spirit of that era in a modern form. The new light tram represents not just nostalgia, but progress: a blend of technology, sustainability, and city-friendly design.
Cities like Gurugram are also exploring similar projects, signaling a broader shift towards efficient and environment-conscious transit systems across the country.
With Kochi leading the way, India’s urban transport map may soon see a revival of trams — not as relics of the past, but as models for the future.
