KOKRAJHAR : A tense and violent incident erupted today afternoon at the BTC Legislative Assembly building in Kokrajhar as thousands of tribal students and activists protested against the Scheduled Tribe (ST) classification proposal for six communities.
The demonstration which began at Bodoland University, Devargaon, rapidly escalated into a storming and vandalizing of the BTC Legislative Assembly premises at Bodofa Nwgwr in Kokrajhar.

The protestors who were part of a large tribal student alliance marched from Devargaon via JD Road to the BTC Secretariat in Bodofa Nagar.
Ignoring heavy police barricades the demonstrators forcefully entered the BTC Legislative Assembly building damaging furniture and equipment in the process.
During the protest the crowd raised strongly worded slogans condemning prominent political figures including BTC Chief Hagrama Mohilary, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and others while demanding the immediate cancellation of the ST classification of the six communities.
The situation reached a critical point before the intervention of the district administration. Kokrajhar District Commissioner M. Partin assured the protesters that their demands would be taken seriously. A memorandum was also submited to the Assam C M through DC Kokrajgar by the protestors.
As a result of this assurance, the protestors agreed to suspend their agitation, bringing a temporary halt to the unrest. The administration has promised to forward the tribal students’ concerns to the Assam government and other relevant authorities.
