Silchar: The Lions Club of Silchar Valley View on Friday observed the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand with a sports festival at Samiran Nag Modern English Medium School, Silcoorie.

Organised in association with the Purnima Nag Memorial Society, the programme featured chocolate and frog races, sprint, football, hit-the-target, and a sports quiz. Winners in each category received first, second and third prizes, while all participants were given chocolates.

During the closing session, Sanjeev Roy recounted the life and achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, explaining why he came to be remembered as the “Magician of Hockey.” The quiz was conducted by school principal Pronoy Nag and club project chairperson Subir Dey.

To honour the hockey icon, ten saplings were planted on the school campus. Parents, guardians, and residents praised the initiative, calling it a meaningful way to encourage sporting spirit and respect for national heroes among children.
