Imphal: In a landmark moment for Manipur’s transparency and governance framework, Nungshitombi Athokpam was sworn in on Friday as the State Information Commissioner – becoming the first woman to hold the post in the state.

The oath of office was administered by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla during a ceremony at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Imphal, according to an official communique.

Athokpam’s appointment has been made under the provisions of Section 15(3) of the Right to Information Act, 2005. Her tenure and terms of service will follow Section 16(1) of the Act.

Speaking after the ceremony, she said her primary focus would be to ensure timely and accurate dissemination of information to citizens while upholding administrative efficiency. She stressed that an informed public is essential for understanding government decision-making without disrupting developmental activities.

She further assured that she would carry out her responsibilities with integrity and in the larger interest of the people. The event was attended by MLA Th. Biswajit Singh, the Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, Additional Chief Secretary, Advocate General, and several senior state government officials.
